And on to Groningen. Groningen is about 150 km northeast of Amsterdam. We took the train (of course), and had a somewhat (un)eventful journey, ending at the grand train station. One of those Mercedes taxis then zipped us over to our hotel, the very grand Schimmelpenninck. It was Sunday, and well, you can read about it in my journal. Groningen was one of the last parts of the Netherlands to be liberated during World War II. Parts of it were heavily damaged, and look very different than the old parts of the city. I was reminded of this on a couple of our walks around the Centrum, and then again when I had a long conversation with the owner of a postcard shop across the street from the Groningen Museum. He had his own small museum in the back of his shop that chronicled the history of the Jewish community in Groningen, and how it was destroyed during the war. We had a somber and sober moment together. |
